About WinE

Women in Engineering (WinE), Ghana is a dynamic Group of Strategic Interest (GSI) within the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), established to empower females in the study and practice of engineering and to position them to rise higher and take advantage of opportunities in industry, academia, public service, and all related sectors in Ghana and beyond. WinE brings together Ghanaian female engineering professionals, engineers in training, and engineering students who are members of GhIE, forming a unified and purposeful community dedicated to excellence, equity, and impact.WinE was formed in April 1999 through the vision and support of Ing. Prof. K. A. Andam (of blessed memory), the 30th President of GhIE. Since its establishment, the Division has grown into a visible and respected platform within Ghana’s engineering landscape, championing gender inclusion, nurturing technical competence, and contributing to the development of a strong pipeline of female engineers.

As a not-for-profit subsidiary of GhIE, WinE operates in accordance with the Constitution and Bye Laws of the Institution and is supported administratively by the GhIE Secretariat and Branches.

At the heart of WinE is the belief that the meaningful participation of women is essential to Ghana’s engineering and national development agenda. The Division therefore works to promote the study and practice of engineering among women, ensure equal opportunities for both genders in engineering careers, provide a strong support network for women engineers, and serve as a unified and representative voice on issues affecting women in engineering. These objectives are pursued through strategic initiatives including outreach and awareness creation, mentorship and networking, advocacy, capacity building, and community building.
WinE’s programmes span the entire engineering lifecycle. The Division engages young girls through school visits, STEM camps, and digital platforms; partners with educational institutions to encourage enrolment and retention in engineering programmes; provides counselling, information, and guidance on engineering education and practice; and supports continuous professional development through workshops, seminars, and targeted training. WinE also promotes networking and experience sharing among members, develops national and international linkages, and actively participates in relevant professional events.

In line with its commitment to holistic empowerment, WinE advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion, highlights challenges faced by female engineering practitioners and students, and seeks practical resolutions to these challenges. The Division further supports community building through social and wellness programmes, and advocates for flexible work arrangements and childcare support that enable women to thrive professionally and personally.
